"Recycled island is a research project on the potential of realizing a habitable floating island in the Pacific Ocean made from all the plastic waste that are momentarily floating around in the ocean." from

Well very interesting on the point of view that these megatons of nasty plastic bits could be useful for something and especially removed from some places where they are just completely disrupting the ecosystem! But
the idea that it would be suited for climatic refugees could be shocking for some, in fact most climatic refugees haven't done anything at all as a share in the global climate disruption and expect them to happily live on our rubbishes instead of some continental lands with mountains, rivers and all the characteristics associated with a natural continental platforms is a bit optimistic, and even if the project was incredibly well built, it's extremely difficult to assert that : (1) nothing toxic will leak from the platform and contaminate the inhabitants, (2) it could resist any future storms powered by strong climate change, (3) it would have a strong buoyancy long enough when actually most of the rubbishes are barely floating (4) these plastic rubbishes being carbon based hold quite an amazing amount of energy! Isn't it likely that some bacterias evolve to eat these things! By the way I heard about some genetic engineering going in that direction and if that happens naturally or artificially it could be disastrous for such a platform and may be not so great for the environment because a lot of CO2 is likely to be released by the voracious organisms!
Anyway gathering this junk is a good idea but once again trying to settle some people on it close by to a paradise like Hawaii is sort of doubly insensitive, because who wants to live on heaps of rubbishes and who wants a mountain of rubbish in his or her wonderful neighborhood? But who would not react to this idea and start to think about it? Because of the previous points this idea is likely to drive strong reactions and also capable to have many people thinking concretely about what could be done to improve the fundamental idea :
How to make something useful with this plastic junk while freeing the ecosystem?
May be a new idea :
Gather the junk with reasonable means and stabilize it in already polluted shallow water, the idea is to create a plastic island laid on the sea/ocean ground, so a strong buoyancy is not a problem anymore! Also resting on a solid ground would make it more resistant to storms. The other interesting points of this idea are expressed here : :
- Plastic junk collection should probably be done only in arrays where marine life is seriously impaired by the junk, sort of dead zone, therefore collection could be done without disturbing much life at all. Of course the amplitude of the supposed dead zones and their localization would be a first step for junk collection.
- Eventual toxic leaking would have a weak impact because of the surrounding already polluted environment.
- Some vegetation should colonize the island by all means to have some more stabilization with the plants roots. Plastic being not especially nutritive for plants, some real grounds and rocks sĥould be used, may be as a support structure for the island. Once enough plants get a strong grip on the island we could have automatic fertilization from sea birds allowing a reasonable life balance.
- This would allow some fantastic research on "natural" colonization of plastic junks. Allowing the island to support its first inhabitants who would be scientists.
- May be after many years of stabilization and depollution some people could be interested to leave there, but may be it would not be a good idea because of possible hazards, but even so such a project would have had many benefits and lead to many new knowledge about recycling and environmental rehabilitation.
